The S.A.M program is designed to provide support, assessment, and counseling to UCSB students who require a personalized and structured alcohol and drug counseling intervention. The S.A.M. Program is the second tier of the CASE Program, and students may be required to attend the S.A.M program if they are referred again following completion of the CASE program. In addition to these referrals, the S.A.M program is available to any UCSB student and should also be considered for any student who may be struggling with issues regarding alcohol or drugs. The students can be referred through a wide network of concerned university professionals, including medical providers, student affairs professionals, counselors, residential life staff, athletic coaches, academic advisors, faculty, etc.
SAM. Program Details
- Screening & Assessment: S.AM students will each receive an initial alcohol and drug (AOD) screening and assessment.
- Interdepartmental Collaboration: The SAM program will collaborate with multiple departments and adjunct services, as determined by the needs of the student. Students may also be referred to appropriate University departments that provide specialized service, (i.e. SHS for medical, psychiatry services, Academic Advising, Disabled Students, EOP, Women’s Center, etc.)
- Individualized Treatment Program: An individualized program will be designed for each SAM Program student following 3 individual sessions with an alcohol and drug counselor to gain an in-depth assessment of their needs. The treatment program will then be reviewed by the AOD professional counseling team, including licensed psychotherapists, the Director of the ADP Program and ADP counselors and educators, always taking care to protect the student’s confidentiality when possible.
- Referral: The SAM program will provide resources and make decisions based on the severity of the students’ situations. Students with riskier drug and drinking patterns will receive more intensive services. If a student needs a detoxification or in-patient medical program, ADP staff will refer students to Cottage Hospital or a provider in the student’s home community.
- Follow-Up Sessions: Completion of the SAM Program may involve follow-up sessions extending over a period of weeks or months. All SAM Program students will review and implement their individual program in consultation with a SAM counselor. Students will receive completion forms to submit to the referral source as required.
