SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS IN RECOVERY
The challenge to resist drugs and alcohol in the college environment can be too
much to handle alone for students in recovery. The UCSB campus and the adjacent
community of Isla Vista present unique challenges for students. Although 20% of
our students report not drinking at all, alcohol and drugs are prevalent in many
social settings.
HOUSING
Students in recovery report feeling challenged living with other students who use
alcohol or other substances in any amount. Substance free dorms have been helpful,
and students in recovery pairing together to share an apartment in Isla Vista or
the surrounding Santa Barbara area have been a vital solution for many.
- Some UCSB Dorms contain
Substance-Free Floors which housed approximately 165 students for the 2007 school
year.
-
UCSB Community Housing may be able to pair students requesting roommates who
prefer a substance free lifestyle. Check out their website or contact
Maya Salmon, Program Coordinator for assistance.
COUNSELING RESOURCES
Students in recovery are invited to contact the UCSB Alcohol and Drug Program for
a FREE and CONFIDENTIAL appointment with a Counselor. We are here to help students
make a healthy transition to UCSB and to act as a support network to ensure that
no student in recovery feels alone.
Students in recovery will find strong support all over campus and in the surrounding
community to help maintain and even strengthen their commitment.
- The UCSB Alcohol & Drug Program, strategically located in the heart of Isla Vista
at the Embarcadero Hall building and with offices on campus in the Student Health
Services building, has the following programs and services available:
- Individual Counseling
- Recovery Support Groups
- Moderation Support Groups
- Tobacco Cessation: Individual Counseling and Groups

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO SOCIALIZE WITHOUT DRINKING?
Only you can determine whether or not you’re strong enough in your recovery to socialize
at events where alcohol is prevalent. If you decide to navigate these waters, think
about what your safety net might be. Here are some ideas that have worked for other
students:
- Bring a friend who will be supportive if you begin to question your commitment to
sobriety.
- Be ready to call a friend or sponsor for help.
- Are you OK socializing with moderate drinkers but not with heavy drinkers?
Decide in advance when you might need to leave a party.

SANTA BARBARA COMMUNITY RESOURCES
A list of community mental health providers covered by the University insurance
plan is maintained. Alcohol and Drug Program Counselors can make referrals to community
providers after meeting with students who may benefit from more extensive care or
who may prefer to be seen outside of the university setting. Many community health
providers offer discounted rates to students enrolled in the University Student
Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). For students not enrolled in the SHIP Program, contact
with the desired provider should be made by the student to determine particular
insurance coverage.
UCSB Alcohol and Drug Program also maintains information about drug and alcohol
programs in other California communities. Please call for more detailed information:
(805) 893-5013.
