Exercise and Sports Studies 2: Substance Abuse
This three unit course is an overview designed to introduce students to physiological, psychological, and social ramifications of alcohol and drug abuse. Topics such as peer pressure, psychosocial stress, abuse patterns, intervention programs, drug testing, and utilization of local agencies are discussed.

ED 191B: Alcohol and Drugs
ED 191B provides internship training on alcohol and drugs including life skills, health skills, and peer education skills. The class examines the role party culture in college plays in a healthy lifestyle.

The focus on increasing safety at UCSB. Students put into practice the alcohol, drugs, and helping skills knowledge they learned in ED 191B. Benefits include:
- Public speaking - STAR interns present health information (for example: how to reduce negative effects of alcohol, what to do in an emergency, and how to help a friend) to groups and at information tables.
- Work with professionals in the Alcohol and Other Drug field.
- Leadership opportunities (Teaching Assistants, STAR Coordinator)
- Sponsor community health campaigns – National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Great American Smokeout, Halloween Safety, Project Hydrate, National Alcohol Screening Day, and Safe Grad.
- Strong friendships with those who share common interest in reducing violence and supporting responsible use or non-use of drugs, including alcohol.
