CASE Program

The UCSB Alcohol and Drug Program has designed a program called CASE: College Alcohol Substance Education based upon the latest research in alcohol and drug prevention for college students. The UCSB ADP Program acknowledges that abstinence from alcohol is the only no-risk alternative and the only legal option for those under 21 years of age. At the same time, the program proposes that underage college students who choose to drink should learn to do so with the least risk and harm possible.

Students are given the freedom to discuss openly their experiences with alcohol, drugs, and partying. CASE students will have homework and group activities which will help them reflect on their individual relationship with drugs and alcohol.

CASE course content will include:

  • alcohol and drug information (such as the effects of blood alcohol concentration)
  • discussion of health, social, academic, and legal consequences of college alcohol and other drug use
  • risk reduction strategies (including how to moderate drinking and identify an alcohol or drug emergency)
  • strategies for preventing future problems with alcohol and drugs

Format of the Program:

  • 1 Intake Session
  • 5 Weekly Class Meetings

CASE is available to:

  • Students living in the UCSB and affiliated residence halls who are referred for alcohol and drug policy violations
  • Court-referred college students who have been cited or arrested for: Minor in Possession, Possession of a Fake I.D. or Public Intoxication. Students who participate in the CASE Program may be eligible for reduced fines and may avoid license suspension. The Court will determine eligibility.
  • UCSB students who volunteer to attend CASE

The CASE Program is located in the Alcohol and Drug Program offices in Isla Vista on the second floor of Embarcadero Hall (935 Embarcadero Del Norte, Isla Vista). The groups are lead by Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, PhD clinicians and supervised Marriage and Family Therapist Interns. The program fee is $75 for UCSB students. However, the program fee will be waived for students who voluntarily enroll in the CASE program. For more information, please contact Danielle Lau ; Danielle.Lau@sa.ucsb.edu ; 893-2714.

If a student is referred for a second violation, they will attend the SAM Program (Skills, Awareness and Motivation).
